My Experience:

Deutschland! Germany is the country that I have traveled to the most. Every time that I have been in Europe, I have gone to Germany. I absolutely love Germany. The culture is so rich, I love the food, architecture, and I have many friends who live in Germany. I also love traveling to Germany to practice my German! As a German major, Germany has a lot of importance to me.

My Germany adventures started in Munich, Germany when I went on a French and German Club High school trip in 2014. This was my first time that I was able to utilize my German skills. This first trip to Germany actually inspired me to further my German education and to major in German in college. In Munich, I went to Neuschwanstein castle which was the castle of King Ludwig II and was the inspiration for Cinderella's castle in Disney World. Also in Munich, I went to the Marienplatz and had my first ever German Pretzel, ate at the original Hofbrauhaus, and visited the Nymphenburg Palace and BMW museum. Travelling outside of Munich, I went to the Dachau concentration camp. This was an extremely saddening experience but was very important for me to see. During this Germany adventure, we made short stops in Heidelberg, where we visited the Heidelberg castle, and Rothenburg where I went to a Christmas store.

My second trip to Germany was during the summer after my freshman year of college where I conducted a research project about the chocolate industries in Switzerland, Belgium, and Germany. Germany was the last country on my research trip. I began my research in Cologne and visited the famous Lindt chocolate museum. During my three day stay in Cologne, I traveled to Bonn for a day trip. I was delighted with this city. I went to the birth house of Mozart and walked around the botanical gardens that surrounded the University of Bonn.

Following Cologne, I traveled to Frankfurt. Frankfurt was the last stop on my chocolate journey. I met with a chocolatier who owned his own small chocolate shop. I conducted an interview with him all in German because he did not speak much English. This was really a breakthrough moment for me. Frankfurt was an interesting city. Most of the city is quite modern and has many skyscrapers. As you go to the middle of the city, there is the Old Town which has all the old, traditional German buildings. This was an interesting contrast to the modernity of most of the city. I did go to the Zoo in Frankfurt and I was disappointed. The exhibits were very unkempt.

My third trip to Germany was during the last few days of my study abroad in Vienna. At this point in my semester, I had traveled to 13 countries. I did not want to end the semester on unlucky 13 so I decided to to do a day trip to Munich. The bus ride was about 5 hours from Vienna to Munich. I only had about 4 hours to spend in Munich so I visited the Marienplatz again and did some clothes shopping.

Overall, Ich liebe Deutschland! I am obsessed with Kinder Eggs, Schnitzel, and Pretzels, the German language, and culture. I now have many friends in Germany due to my college experiences. I will definitely be going back to Germany each time that I visit Europe. Stay tuned for when I study in Berlin for the Fall 2019 Semester!
